Priorities for Carlsbad students

Strong academics are the reason public schools exist. Every other conversation is downstream of whether our students can read, write, reason, and solve problems.

• Keep grade-level reading and math proficiency at the center of district goal-setting, and report progress in plain language families can actually read.
• Protect instructional minutes. Time is the district's scarcest resource, and it should be defended against low-value additions to the school day.
• Insist on honest measurement. Grades and district dashboards should reflect real mastery, not inflation that makes the numbers look better than student outcomes.
• Support teachers with the training, materials, and classroom stability they need to teach the curriculum well.
• Make sure students who fall behind get identified early and receive targeted intervention rather than being passed along.

Parents are not a public-comment formality. They are the district's partners, and they should hear about decisions before those decisions are final.

• Communicate proposals early, in plain language, with enough lead time for families to respond meaningfully.
• Publish board materials and budget documents in formats that a working parent can understand in fifteen minutes.
• Create real feedback channels at the school-site level, not just at board meetings that end after bedtime.
• Answer parent questions directly. If the answer is no, explain why; if the district made a mistake, say so.
• Represent Trustee Area 1 specifically — its schools, its neighborhoods, and its families.

Learning requires a calm campus. Teachers cannot teach and students cannot focus when basic expectations are not consistently upheld.

• Set clear, consistent, developmentally appropriate behavior expectations, and support the staff who enforce them.
• Review campus safety and supervision practices regularly, with an emphasis on prevention rather than reaction.
• Keep bullying and harassment reporting simple, visible, and genuinely followed up on.
• Make sure emergency procedures are practiced, understood, and communicated to families.
• Address classroom disruption honestly, because a small number of unaddressed issues can consume an entire year of instruction.

E-bikes are now part of daily life in Carlsbad. Our students deserve practical education before a preventable injury forces the conversation.

• Support age-appropriate e-bike and traffic safety education delivered in partnership with the city and local law enforcement.
• Give families clear, consistent guidance on helmets, speed, sidewalk and bike-lane rules, and passenger limits.
• Work with the city on safe routes to school, drop-off flow, and bike parking at campuses that need it.
• Treat this as a shared community problem to solve, not a reason to blame students or parents.

Kids learn better when they move. Physical activity is not a reward to be taken away; it is part of how children develop attention and self-regulation.

• Protect and, where possible, expand recess and unstructured play time at the elementary level.
• Support movement breaks built into the instructional day rather than tacked on at the end.
• Keep physical education meaningful and consistently delivered across schools.
• Look at practical wellness factors that affect learning — lunch time length, shade, water access, and outdoor space.

Technology is a tool, not a teacher. Devices should be used when they clearly add value, not by default.

• Audit where screens replace stronger instruction and restore direct teaching where it works better.
• Preserve handwriting, physical books, class discussion, and hands-on work as core parts of learning.
• Set age-appropriate expectations for device use, especially in the earliest grades.
• Evaluate education software on evidence of student outcomes, not on vendor marketing.
• Be transparent with parents about what students are doing on district devices and why.

Every dollar in the district budget came from a taxpayer and belongs to students. It should be spent where it reaches classrooms.

• Prioritize classroom instruction, teacher support, and school-site needs over administrative growth.
• Require clear, comparable reporting on major contracts, programs, and facilities spending.
• Plan for enrollment realities honestly instead of deferring hard decisions onto future boards.
• Ask what a program accomplished before renewing it.

Trust is earned through consistency. It comes from doing what you said you would do and explaining yourself when circumstances change.

• Vote in public with reasons stated on the record.
• Avoid last-minute agenda items on consequential decisions.
• Follow up on commitments and report back, even when progress is slow.
• Treat staff, teachers, students, and families with respect — including people who disagree.
